At-Home Poison Safety

Did you know that the majority of poison exposures reported to poison centers occur at home? This is why poison prevention and safety in the home is important to ensure the well-being of yourself and your loved ones.

Here are some tips to help prevent poisonings in your home:

  • Keep all medications and chemicals out of reach of children, preferably in locked cabinets or drawers.
  • Keep all items in their original containers, and never put them in food or drink containers to help avoid confusion.
  • If you need to move chemicals or medications to another container, label them with their name.
  • Use child-resistant packaging properly by closing the container securely after use.
  • Always read and follow the label instructions on all products.
  • Save the Poison Help phone number (1-800-222-1222) to your cell phone contact list or keep it in a convenient location.
  • Keep poisonous plants, bulbs, and seeds, away from children.
  • Dispose of expired or unused medications properly by taking them to a local pharmacy or participating in a drug take-back program.

By following these tips, you can help prevent poisonings in your home and ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.
